MUSEUM OF KYMENLAAKSO
INTERNSHIP

After working over four months in different fields of building restoration, I decided it would be good gain experience from working at a museum. I got an internship at the regional museum of Kymenlaakso. My job as an intern was very diverse: it included conservation, indexing objects, documentation, packaging and assisting the architectural researcher of the museum.

I worked with conserving several different objects that were going to be exhibited the following yea, such as an ivory fan and a chest from 1800's. The inkle bands were washed and the ivory fan and the chest required some conservation procedures, including mechanical and chemical cleansing, consolidation and removing rust. I really enjoyed my hands-on training at the museum and gained a lot of new experience on the field.

The decorative painting of this chest was cleaned mechanically and with caution
The corroded iron was revived with a tannic acid solution
Tannic acid reacts with iron oxides and forms ferric tannade, a darker layer on the surface
Ivory in the process of cleansing
Consolidation of ivory
Testing the solubility of dyes of the inkle bands
Washing inkle bands that passed the solubility test
Packaging objects
Taking documentation photos
Labeling fabrics
