MARQUETRY PORTRAIT

I wanted to make a special gift for my friend, a portrait of her, and decided to use wood inlay as the technique. I had previously done marquetry, but never a portrait of someone before. I tried different methods and adjusted my technique along the way. I picked different types of wood to give semi-realistic colours and textures. I was really happy with the outcome and I got a lot of positive feedback for it. I will definitely make more of these in the future.

Finished instarsia portrait.
Starting point. Here you can see the picture I used a model.
The outlines are beginning to shape.
Adding details to the face.
More details and shades.
The wood inlay is finished and shades with hot sand.
The inlay is glued to a plywood board and sanded.
The details for the eyes are done with shellack putty.
After oiling the wood, the details really pop out.
