KOTKA ST. NICHOLAS CHURCH
October - December 2019
From October to December of 2019 I was taking part in a project of Kymen Karmiini: the window restoration of Saint Nicholas orthodox church. The Russian neoclassical building dates back to the turn of 18th - 19th century and also happens to be the oldest remaining building in the city of Kotka.
The project included the surface restoration, re-glazing and linseed-oil painting of the massive altar windows. Most of the work was done in a workshop, but window frames were restored on the spot. The installation of the heavy windows was very interesting, as two workers had to work from as small crane above the altar and another two from a scare outside. The work taught be about working under pressure and thorough planning, as moving up and down the crane was time-consuming. Also it helped me get accustomed to working with high altitudes!
