CODEX GLAZIER AND COPTIC BINDING

November - December 2017

I made a replica of the Codex Glazier and another book with leather covers and Coptic binding as part of a course in Tartu Art College. The Codex Glazier is a Coptic codex dating back to 4th or 5th century. The Coptic binding methods were used between 2nd and 11th century by the Egyptian Christians, the Copts.

In both of the books, I used plywood boards as covers and purple goat leather in the covers and straps. I decorated the straps of the codex with hot tools. The toggles of the codex, which I purchased, are made of moose bone. In the gluing process I used cold fish glue, which worked very well with wood and leather. I absolutely loved making these Coptic style books.
