BOOK WITH GRAINED COVERS
October - November 2017
As my final project in the course “Non-Adhesive Bindings”, I decided to make a book with wooden covers. My aim was to make a sturdy and timeless diary for my father’s 60th birthday present, a memoir that he could write in. I wanted to put in use the graining skills that I had acquired in a previous course, and I decided upon graining walnut root, because of its aesthetic qualities. The graining was done with beer and pigments on two base coated plywood boards. The boards were polished with shellac. The spine of the book was made with leather and cardboard, and the binding I used was link stitch binding.
